The number of deaths among children aged under 1 year, (infants), in a given period, per 1,000 live births in the same period.

In addition to giving us key information about maternal and infant health, the infant mortality rate is an important marker of the overall health of a society.
Infant mortality in the US[edit | edit source]
In 2018, the infant mortality rate in the United States was 5.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, according to the CDC].
Causes of Infant Mortality[edit | edit source]
- Birth defects.
- Preterm birth and low birth weight.
- Maternal pregnancy complications.
- Sudden infant death syndrome.
- Injuries (e.g., suffocation).
Ranking of countries based on infant mortality[edit | edit source]
According to the data compiled by the CIA, Afghanistan, with an infant mortality rate of 110, followed by Somalia rank the worst. At the bottom of this list, are countries like Finland with infant mortality rate of 2.50, Norway 2.50, Singapore 2.40, Iceland 2.10, Japan 2.00, and Monaco 1.8. See the full list here
