Intermarché is a French supermarket chain, part of the large retail group Les Mousquetaires. Founded in 1969, Intermarché is known for its wide range of products and services, including grocery items, fresh produce, meat and seafood, as well as household goods. The chain operates on a franchise basis, with each store owned and operated by independent members of the Les Mousquetaires group.

History[edit | edit source]

Intermarché was established in 1969 under the name EX Offices de distribution by Jean-Pierre Le Roch, who aimed to create a cooperative of independent retailers to compete more effectively with large distribution chains. The name was changed to Intermarché in 1972. Since its inception, the chain has expanded significantly, both within France and internationally, with stores now found in several other European countries, including Belgium, Portugal, and Poland.

Business Model[edit | edit source]

The business model of Intermarché is unique in that each store is independently owned and operated by a member of the Les Mousquetaires group. This allows for a high degree of autonomy in store management, product selection, and pricing. The group emphasizes local sourcing and has developed its own distribution networks to support this. Intermarché also operates its own food processing facilities, ensuring control over the quality and pricing of its private label products.

Sustainability Initiatives[edit | edit source]

Intermarché has implemented several sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing its environmental impact. These include efforts to reduce food waste, initiatives to decrease plastic usage in packaging, and the promotion of local and organic products. The chain has also invested in energy-efficient store designs and operations.

Controversies[edit | edit source]

Like many large retail chains, Intermarché has faced its share of controversies. These have included issues related to competitive practices, disputes with suppliers over pricing, and concerns about the impact of large retail stores on small local businesses. Intermarché has worked to address these concerns through various initiatives and negotiations.

Expansion and Future Plans[edit | edit source]

Intermarché continues to expand, both in France and internationally. The chain has announced plans to open new stores, renovate existing ones, and invest in digital technologies to enhance the shopping experience. Intermarché aims to strengthen its position in the market by focusing on competitive pricing, product quality, and sustainability.
