International Nurses Day

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

International Nurses Day is an international day observed around the world on 12 May of each year, to mark the contributions that nurses make to society. It was first observed in 1965.

History[edit | edit source]

International Nurses Day was first proposed by the International Council of Nurses (ICN) in 1953. The proposal was accepted in 1965, by the ICN, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the United Nations (UN). The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

Observance[edit | edit source]

On International Nurses Day, various events and activities are organized by nursing organizations and health care institutions around the world. These events aim to highlight the important role of nurses in health care, promote the nursing profession, and improve the conditions and image of nurses.

Theme[edit | edit source]

Each year, the ICN prepares and distributes the International Nurses' Day Kit which contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere. The kit is based on a different theme each year, chosen by the ICN.
