International Psychoanalytical Association

The International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) is an organization dedicated to the advancement of psychoanalysis worldwide. It was founded in 1910 by Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, and is the oldest and largest international psychoanalytic organization.

History[edit | edit source]

The IPA was established in 1910 during the first International Psychoanalytical Congress in Nuremberg, Germany. Sigmund Freud played a pivotal role in its creation, aiming to promote the development and dissemination of psychoanalytic knowledge and practice. The founding members included prominent figures such as Carl Jung, Sándor Ferenczi, and Ernest Jones.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The IPA is governed by an Executive Council, which is elected by its members. The organization is divided into three regions: Europe, North America, and Latin America. Each region has its own regional association that coordinates activities and supports local psychoanalytic societies.

Objectives[edit | edit source]

The primary objectives of the IPA are:

  • To promote the development and application of psychoanalysis.
  • To ensure the highest standards of training and practice.
  • To support research in psychoanalysis.
  • To facilitate communication and collaboration among psychoanalysts worldwide.

Membership[edit | edit source]

Membership in the IPA is open to qualified psychoanalysts who have completed rigorous training programs accredited by the IPA. The organization has over 12,000 members in more than 70 countries.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The IPA organizes biennial congresses, regional conferences, and various scientific meetings to foster the exchange of ideas and research findings. It also publishes the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and other scholarly works.
