Inventor is an individual or a group of individuals who, through a process of study and experimentation, create or discover something new. The term is often associated with scientific and technological innovation, but it can also apply to the creation of new concepts, ideas, or methods in other fields.

An inventor is a person or a group of people who create or discover a new method, form, device or other useful means that becomes known as an invention. The word inventor comes from the Latin verb invenire, invent-, to find. The system of patents was established to encourage inventors by granting limited-term, monopoly protection for good ideas. As a result, patents essential to many modern corporations' operations.

The concept of the inventor has a history dating back to the ancient times. In the past, inventors were often solitary figures, working on their innovations in isolation. However, in the modern era, invention has become a collaborative process, with teams of people working together to create new technologies and solutions.

Inventors play a crucial role in society by driving technological and societal progress. Their innovations can lead to new industries, improve existing ones, and generally increase the standard of living. They also contribute to the growth of the economy by creating jobs and contributing to GDP.

There have been many notable inventors throughout history, including Thomas Edison, who is credited with developing many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures, and Nikola Tesla, known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.
