A page from the Ishinp_

The Ishinp_ (___) is a Japanese medical text compiled in 984 AD by Tamba Yasuyori, a court physician. It is the oldest surviving medical text in Japan and is considered a significant historical document in the study of traditional Chinese medicine and its influence on Japanese medical practices.

History[edit | edit source]

The Ishinp_ was compiled during the Heian period, a time when Chinese culture and knowledge were highly influential in Japan. Tamba Yasuyori, the compiler, was a physician in the service of the Japanese imperial court. He gathered information from various Chinese medical texts, some of which are no longer extant, making the Ishinp_ an invaluable resource for understanding ancient Chinese medical practices.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The Ishinp_ consists of 30 volumes, each dealing with different aspects of medicine. The text covers a wide range of topics, including anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, treatment, and pharmacology. It also includes sections on acupuncture, moxibustion, and herbal medicine.

Volume Highlights[edit | edit source]

Influence[edit | edit source]

The Ishinp_ had a profound impact on the development of Japanese medicine. It served as a primary reference for physicians in Japan for centuries and helped to integrate Chinese medical knowledge into Japanese practices. The text also influenced the development of Kampo, the Japanese adaptation of traditional Chinese medicine.

Preservation[edit | edit source]

The original manuscript of the Ishinp_ is preserved in the Kyoto University library. It is considered a national treasure of Japan and is studied by scholars interested in the history of medicine and the cultural exchange between China and Japan.
