Istria County
Istria County is a county in Croatia located in the westernmost part of the country, covering the largest part of the Istrian Peninsula. It is a popular tourist destination known for its Mediterranean climate, historical sites, and gastronomy.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Istria County is bordered by the Gulf of Trieste to the north, the Kvarner Bay to the east and south, and the Adriatic Sea to the west. The county's terrain is diverse, with a coastal plain, hilly interior, and mountainous regions. The highest peak is Mount Učka, which is part of the Učka Nature Park.

The history of Istria County dates back to prehistoric times, with the region being inhabited by various Illyrian tribes. It was later incorporated into the Roman Empire, and subsequently passed through the hands of the Byzantine Empire, Frankish Empire, Venetian Republic, Habsburg Monarchy, Kingdom of Italy, and Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, before becoming part of independent Croatia.

The economy of Istria County is diverse, with significant contributions from tourism, agriculture, fishing, and manufacturing. The region is known for its production of olive oil, wine, and truffles, and is a significant player in the Croatian food and beverage industry.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Istria County is rich in cultural heritage, with numerous historical sites, including the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Arena in Pula, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in the world. The region is also known for its traditional music, dance, and festivals, such as the Motovun Film Festival and the Pula Film Festival.
Administration[edit | edit source]
Istria County is divided into 10 cities and 31 municipalities, with Pula being the largest city and the administrative center. The county is governed by the Istria County Assembly, which is elected every four years.
