Jack Preger (born 25 July 1930) is a British physician and humanitarian known for his work in providing medical care to the poor and destitute in Kolkata, India. He is the founder of the non-governmental organization Calcutta Rescue, which offers free medical services, education, and support to the underprivileged.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Jack Preger was born in Manchester, England, in 1930. He pursued his early education in the United Kingdom and later attended Oxford University, where he studied agriculture. After completing his degree, Preger worked as a farmer in Wales for several years.
In the late 1960s, Preger experienced a profound change in his life direction. He decided to study medicine and enrolled at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, where he earned his medical degree in 1973.
Medical Career and Humanitarian Work[edit | edit source]
After qualifying as a doctor, Preger initially worked in Bangladesh with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to assist with the repatriation of refugees following the Bangladesh Liberation War. During his time in Bangladesh, he became acutely aware of the dire medical needs of the impoverished population.
In 1979, Preger moved to Kolkata, India, where he began treating patients on the streets. He set up a makeshift clinic on the pavement, providing free medical care to those who could not afford it. His work quickly gained attention, and he became known as the "Pavement Doctor."
Founding of Calcutta Rescue[edit | edit source]
In 1980, Preger founded Calcutta Rescue, a registered charity aimed at providing comprehensive medical care, education, and social services to the poor. The organization operates several clinics, schools, and vocational training centers in and around Kolkata.
Calcutta Rescue's medical programs include treatment for tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic diseases, as well as maternal and child health services. The organization also runs educational programs for children and adults, focusing on literacy and vocational skills.
Challenges and Recognition[edit | edit source]
Preger's work has not been without challenges. He faced legal issues in the 1980s when the Indian government attempted to deport him for practicing medicine without a license. However, he successfully fought the charges and continued his work.
Despite these challenges, Preger's contributions have been widely recognized. He has received numerous awards for his humanitarian efforts, including the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1993.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Jack Preger's dedication to serving the underprivileged has inspired many. His work has highlighted the importance of accessible healthcare and education for all, regardless of socio-economic status. Calcutta Rescue continues to operate, providing vital services to thousands of people each year.
