Jacques Guillemeau (1550–1613) was a prominent French surgeon and obstetrician during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is best known for his contributions to the field of obstetrics and ophthalmology, and for his influential writings on these subjects.

Jacques Guillemeau was born in 1550 in Orléans, France. He studied medicine under the guidance of the renowned French surgeon Ambroise Paré, who was a significant influence on his career. Guillemeau is particularly noted for his work in obstetrics. He authored the book De l'heureux accouchement des femmes (On the Happy Delivery of Women) in 1609, which became a seminal text in the field. This work provided detailed descriptions of childbirth techniques and the management of complications during delivery. Guillemeau's methods emphasized the importance of gentle handling and the use of specific instruments to assist in difficult births.

Contributions to Ophthalmology[edit | edit source]

In addition to his work in obstetrics, Guillemeau made significant contributions to ophthalmology. He wrote Traité des maladies de l'œil (Treatise on Eye Diseases), which was one of the earliest comprehensive texts on eye diseases and their treatments.
