James C. Hawthorne was a prominent American physician and pioneer in the field of psychiatry during the 19th century. He is best known for his contributions to the establishment and development of mental health care facilities in the Pacific Northwest.

James C. Hawthorne was born in Pennsylvania in 1819. He pursued his medical education at the University of Louisville, where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1841. After completing his education, Hawthorne practiced medicine in various locations before eventually moving to the Oregon Territory.

In 1857, Hawthorne relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he became deeply involved in the care of individuals with mental illnesses. Recognizing the lack of adequate facilities for the mentally ill, he advocated for the establishment of a dedicated institution. His efforts culminated in the founding of the Oregon Hospital for the Insane in 1861, which he operated in partnership with Dr. A. M. Loryea.
