James Cook University (JCU) is a public university in North Queensland, Australia, with its main campuses located in the cities of Townsville and Cairns. Named after the British explorer James Cook, who is credited with the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia, the university was established in 1970, making it the second oldest university in Queensland.

History[edit | edit source]

James Cook University was proclaimed on April 20, 1970, under the James Cook University of North Queensland Act passed by the Queensland Parliament. The university began as an extension of the University of Queensland, which was located in Brisbane, over 1,300 kilometers to the south. The establishment of JCU was in response to the need for a higher education institution in the northern part of the state. The first campus was established in Townsville, and in 1987, a second campus was opened in Cairns to better serve the educational needs of people in far north Queensland.

Campuses[edit | edit source]

JCU's main campuses are in Townsville and Cairns, but it also operates smaller study centers in Mount Isa, Thursday Island, and Singapore. The Townsville campus is the largest and hosts the majority of the university's research facilities and administrative offices. The Cairns campus, while smaller, has been expanding rapidly with significant investment in new buildings and research facilities, particularly in the field of tropical health and medicine.

Townsville Campus[edit | edit source]

The Townsville campus is set in a natural bush and parkland setting, 13 kilometers from the city center. It is home to the university's central administration and a wide range of faculties and departments. This campus also features student accommodation, sporting facilities, and a variety of student services.

Cairns Campus[edit | edit source]

Located in the suburb of Smithfield, the Cairns campus has seen significant growth in both student numbers and infrastructure over the past decade. It is particularly focused on research and education related to tropical environments and communities.

Academic Structure[edit | edit source]

JCU offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research degrees across a broad range of disciplines. The university is renowned for its research and teaching in marine sciences, biodiversity, tropical ecology, global warming, tourism, and tropical medicine and health. It is divided into several colleges and schools, including:
