Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

James J. Chou was born in Taiwan and later moved to the United States for his higher education. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemistry from National Taiwan University. He then pursued his Ph.D. in Biophysics at Harvard University, where he developed a keen interest in NMR spectroscopy.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Chou joined the faculty at Harvard Medical School as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. He later became a full Professor, where he continues to teach and conduct research.

Research[edit | edit source]

Chou's research primarily focuses on the structural and functional studies of membrane proteins and protein complexes using NMR spectroscopy. His work has provided insights into the mechanisms of signal transduction, ion channel function, and viral infection processes. Some of his notable research includes the structural analysis of the HIV-1 gp41 protein and the influenza M2 protein.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

James J. Chou has received numerous awards for his contributions to biophysics and structural biology, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's Pioneer Award and the American Chemical Society (ACS) Biological Chemistry Division Award.

Publications[edit | edit source]

Chou has authored and co-authored numerous research articles in prestigious scientific journals, contributing significantly to the understanding of membrane protein structure and function.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

James J. Chou resides in Boston, Massachusetts, where he continues his research and teaching at Harvard Medical School.
