James Madison DeWolf (June 20, 1843 – June 25, 1876) was an American military surgeon who served in the United States Army during the Indian Wars. He is best known for his role in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he was killed in action.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

James Madison DeWolf was born on June 20, 1843, in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania. He pursued a career in medicine and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in medicine.

Military Career[edit | edit source]

DeWolf joined the United States Army as an assistant surgeon and was assigned to the 7th Cavalry Regiment. He served under the command of Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer during the Great Sioux War of 1876.

Battle of the Little Bighorn[edit | edit source]

The Battle of the Little Bighorn, also known as "Custer's Last Stand," took place on June 25, 1876. DeWolf was part of the 7th Cavalry Regiment that engaged the combined forces of the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes. During the battle, DeWolf was killed while attempting to provide medical assistance to wounded soldiers. His death occurred near the Little Bighorn River in the Montana Territory.

James Madison DeWolf is remembered for his bravery and dedication to his duty as a military surgeon. His name is inscribed on the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, which commemorates those who fought and died in the battle.
