James Norton (born 18 July 1985) is an English actor. He is best known for his roles in the television series Happy Valley, Grantchester, War & Peace, and McMafia.

Early life[edit | edit source]

James Norton was born in London, England. He grew up in Malton, North Yorkshire. Norton attended Ampleforth College, a Roman Catholic boarding school. He later studied theology at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and subsequently attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London.

Career[edit | edit source]

Norton began his acting career in theatre, performing in various productions. He made his film debut in 2009 with a minor role in An Education. He gained wider recognition for his role as Tommy Lee Royce in the critically acclaimed series Happy Valley (2014–2023), for which he received several award nominations.

In 2014, Norton starred as Sidney Chambers in the ITV series Grantchester, a role he played until 2019. He also portrayed Andrei Bolkonsky in the BBC miniseries War & Peace in 2016.

In 2018, Norton played the lead role of Alex Godman in the BBC crime drama series McMafia. His performance was well-received, and the series was praised for its gripping storyline and production quality.

Norton has been open about his diagnosis with type 1 diabetes. He is an advocate for diabetes awareness and has spoken publicly about managing the condition while maintaining a demanding acting career.
