James O. Mason USPHS

James O. Mason (born June 19, 1930) is an American physician and public health administrator. He is best known for his work as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and as the Assistant Secretary for Health at the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

James O. Mason was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in 1954. Mason then went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1958. He later earned a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree and a Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) degree from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Mason served as the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 1983 to 1989.
