Joel S. Schuman
Joel S. Schuman is an American ophthalmologist and a prominent figure in the field of glaucoma research. He is widely recognized for his contributions to the development of optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging technology that has revolutionized the diagnosis and management of ocular diseases.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Joel S. Schuman was born in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Columbia University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. Schuman then attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, where he received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Following medical school, he completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia and a fellowship in glaucoma at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.
Career[edit | edit source]
Schuman began his academic career at the University of Pittsburgh, where he served as the Eye and Ear Foundation Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology. During his tenure, he co-invented optical coherence tomography (OCT) alongside James Fujimoto and Eric Swanson. This technology has become a standard diagnostic tool in ophthalmology, allowing for detailed imaging of the retina and optic nerve.
In 2016, Schuman joined the faculty of New York University (NYU) Langone Health as the Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology. He has also held positions at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine and the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
Schuman's research has primarily focused on the early detection and treatment of glaucoma. His work with OCT has provided clinicians with the ability to detect structural changes in the retina and optic nerve head, which are critical for the early diagnosis of glaucoma. Schuman has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on glaucoma and ocular imaging.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Throughout his career, Schuman has received numerous awards and honors, including the Alcon Research Institute Award, the ARVO Gold Fellow, and the Lewis Rudin Glaucoma Prize. He has also been recognized by the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) for his contributions to the field.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Schuman resides in New York City with his family. He is an avid supporter of the arts and enjoys playing the piano in his spare time.
