John Anthony Barrasso III (born July 21, 1952) is an American politician and physician serving as the senior United States Senator from Wyoming. A member of the Republican Party, he was first appointed to the Senate in 2007 following the death of Senator Craig L. Thomas. Barrasso was subsequently elected in 2008 and reelected in 2012 and 2018.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Barrasso was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1974 and a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1978 from Georgetown University. He then completed a residency at the Yale School of Medicine.
Medical career[edit | edit source]
Before entering politics, Barrasso worked as an orthopedic surgeon in Casper, Wyoming. He served as the president of the Wyoming Medical Society and was a member of the American Medical Association and the American College of Surgeons.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Wyoming Senate[edit | edit source]
Barrasso was elected to the Wyoming Senate in 2002, representing the 27th district. He served until his appointment to the United States Senate in 2007.
United States Senate[edit | edit source]
Barrasso was appointed to the United States Senate on June 22, 2007, following the death of Senator Craig L. Thomas. He won a special election in 2008 to complete the term and was reelected in 2012 and 2018.
In the Senate, Barrasso has served on several committees, including the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. He has been a strong advocate for energy development, healthcare reform, and fiscal responsibility.
Leadership roles[edit | edit source]
Barrasso has held several leadership positions within the Senate. He served as the Chair of the Senate Environment Committee from 2017 to 2021 and has been the Chair of the Senate Republican Conference since 2019. In 2021, he became the Ranking Member of the Senate Energy Committee.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Barrasso was previously married to Linda Nix, with whom he has three children. He is currently married to Bobbi Brown.
