John Francis "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald (February 11, 1863 – October 2, 1950) was an American politician and prominent figure in Boston, Massachusetts. He served as the Mayor of Boston and was a notable member of the Democratic Party. Fitzgerald was the maternal grandfather of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

John F. Fitzgerald was born in the North End neighborhood of Boston to Irish immigrant parents. He attended the Boston Latin School and later enrolled at Harvard Medical School, although he did not complete his medical degree.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Fitzgerald began his political career as a member of the Boston Common Council in 1892. He later served in the Massachusetts Senate and the United States House of Representatives.

Mayor of Boston[edit | edit source]

Fitzgerald was elected as the Mayor of Boston in 1905, serving from 1906 to 1908 and again from 1910 to 1914. During his tenure, he was known for his efforts to modernize the city's infrastructure and for his charismatic public speaking, earning him the nickname "Honey Fitz."

Fitzgerald married Mary Josephine Hannon, and they had six children, including Rose Kennedy, who would become the matriarch of the Kennedy family. Fitzgerald's legacy continued through his grandchildren, most notably John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Ted Kennedy.
