John Frank (epidemiologist)

John Frank is a Canadian epidemiologist and academic. He is the Director of the Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy (SCPHRP) and Chair of Public Health Research and Policy at the University of Edinburgh. He was previously the Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Institute of Population and Public Health.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Frank was born in New York City. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1969, his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California, San Francisco in 1973, and his Master of Science degree in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto in 1976.

Career[edit | edit source]

Frank has held numerous academic and professional positions throughout his career. He was the founding Director of Research at the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto from 1991 to 2001. He was also the founding Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto from 1997 to 2001.

In 2001, Frank was appointed Scientific Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research's Institute of Population and Public Health, a position he held until 2008. During his tenure, he led the development of the Institute's strategic plan and oversaw the allocation of research funding.

In 2008, Frank was appointed Director of the Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Policy (SCPHRP) and Chair of Public Health Research and Policy at the University of Edinburgh. His research at SCPHRP focuses on developing and evaluating public health interventions.

Awards and honours[edit | edit source]

Frank has received numerous awards and honours for his contributions to public health and epidemiology. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He was awarded the Defries Award by the Canadian Public Health Association in 2011 for his outstanding contributions to public health in Canada.
