John Hubbard (March 22, 1794 – February 6, 1869) was an American physician and politician who served as the 22nd Governor of Maine from 1850 to 1853. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

John Hubbard was born in Readfield, Massachusetts (now part of Maine). He attended local schools and later graduated from Dartmouth College in 1816. He subsequently studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his medical degree in 1822.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Hubbard returned to Maine and established a medical practice in Hallowell. He became a well-respected physician in the community and was known for his dedication to public health.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Hubbard entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the Maine Senate in 1843 and served until 1844. In 1849, he was elected as the Governor of Maine, a position he held from 1850 to 1853.

During his tenure as governor, Hubbard focused on issues such as education reform, infrastructure development, and public health. He was a strong advocate for the Maine Law, which was one of the first statutory implementations of prohibition in the United States.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After leaving office, Hubbard continued to be active in public affairs and maintained his medical practice. He passed away on February 6, 1869, in Hallowell.

Hubbard's contributions to both medicine and politics in Maine have left a lasting legacy. He is remembered for his efforts to improve public health and his role in the early prohibition movement.
