John M. Fitzpatrick

John M. Fitzpatrick (15 September 1948 – 14 May 2014) was a renowned Irish urologist and academic, known for his contributions to the field of urology and his leadership in medical education. He served as the head of the Department of Urology at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, and was a prominent figure in the international urological community.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
John M. Fitzpatrick was born in Dublin, Ireland. He attended Belvedere College, a prestigious secondary school in Dublin, before pursuing his medical degree at University College Dublin (UCD). Fitzpatrick graduated with a degree in medicine in 1971 and subsequently completed his surgical training in Dublin.

Fitzpatrick's career in urology began in earnest when he moved to the United Kingdom to further his training. He worked at several hospitals, including the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he honed his skills in urological surgery. Upon returning to Ireland, Fitzpatrick was appointed as a consultant urologist at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin.
In 1986, Fitzpatrick became the head of the Department of Urology at the Mater Hospital, a position he held until his retirement in 2012.
