John McKinly (February 24, 1721 – August 31, 1796) was an American physician and politician from Wilmington, Delaware. He was a member of the Delaware General Assembly, served as President of Delaware, and was a member of the Federalist Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

John McKinly was born in Ulster, Ireland, and emigrated to Delaware in 1742. He settled in Wilmington and established himself as a physician. McKinly quickly became a prominent figure in the community, both for his medical practice and his involvement in local affairs.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

McKinly's political career began with his election to the Delaware General Assembly. He was a staunch supporter of the American Revolution and played a significant role in Delaware's early state government. In 1777, McKinly was elected as the first President of Delaware, a position equivalent to the modern-day Governor.

Capture and Imprisonment[edit | edit source]

During the American Revolutionary War, McKinly was captured by British forces following the Battle of Brandywine. He was held as a prisoner of war for several months before being exchanged. His capture and subsequent imprisonment were significant events in his life and had a lasting impact on his political career.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After his release, McKinly returned to Wilmington and resumed his medical practice. He continued to be active in public affairs, although he never again held high political office. McKinly passed away on August 31, 1796, and was buried in the Old Swedes Church cemetery in Wilmington.

John McKinly's contributions to Delaware's early statehood and his service during a critical period in American history are remembered as significant aspects of his legacy.
