John Marks Templeton Jr. (February 19, 1940 – May 16, 2015) was an American physician and philanthropist. He was the son of Sir John Templeton, the founder of the John Templeton Foundation, and served as its president from 1995 until his death in 2015.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

John Templeton Jr. was born in New York City, New York, to Sir John Templeton and Judith Folk. He attended Yale University, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He then went on to receive his medical degree from Harvard Medical School.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

Templeton Jr. specialized in pediatric surgery and was a respected member of the medical community. He served as the chief of pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and was a professor of pediatric surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Philanthropy[edit | edit source]

In 1995, Templeton Jr. succeeded his father as president of the John Templeton Foundation. Under his leadership, the foundation continued to support research and initiatives in the fields of science, theology, and philosophy. The foundation is known for its Templeton Prize, which honors individuals who have made significant contributions to affirming life's spiritual dimension.

Templeton Jr. was married to Pina Templeton, and they had three children. He was known for his commitment to his faith and was an active member of the Episcopal Church.

Death[edit | edit source]

John Templeton Jr. passed away on May 16, 2015, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, at the age of 75.
