Jordanian wine

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Jordanian Wine is the production of wine in the country of Jordan. The history of Jordanian wine dates back to ancient times, with the region being one of the oldest wine-producing areas in the world. Despite its ancient history, the modern wine industry in Jordan is relatively young, having been revitalized in the late 20th century.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of wine production in Jordan can be traced back to the Bronze Age, with archaeological evidence suggesting that the region was one of the first in the world to produce wine. The ancient Nabateans are known to have cultivated grapes and produced wine in the area. However, the wine industry in Jordan declined during the Islamic era, due to religious prohibitions on alcohol.

The modern Jordanian wine industry was revitalized in the late 20th century, with the establishment of several new wineries. These wineries have focused on producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Jordanian landscape.

Wine Regions[edit | edit source]

Jordan has several distinct wine regions, each with its own unique climate and soil conditions. The most important of these is the Jordan Valley, which is known for its fertile soils and moderate climate. Other important wine regions in Jordan include the high-altitude vineyards of the Jordanian Highlands and the arid desert regions of the Jordanian Badia.

Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]

A variety of grape varieties are grown in Jordan, including both international varieties and local indigenous varieties. The most widely planted international varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay. Among the indigenous varieties, the most important is the Baladi grape, which is known for its ability to thrive in the arid conditions of the Jordanian Badia.

Wineries[edit | edit source]

There are several wineries in Jordan that are producing high-quality wines. These include the Saint George Winery, which is one of the oldest wineries in the country, and the Zumot Winery, which is known for its organic and biodynamic wines.
