Joseph R. Bertino is a prominent American oncologist and pharmacologist known for his significant contributions to the field of cancer research. He has made notable advancements in the understanding and treatment of leukemia and lymphoma.

Joseph R. Bertino was born in New York City. He completed his undergraduate studies at Cornell University and earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center.

Bertino began his career at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), where he conducted groundbreaking research on the mechanisms of drug resistance in cancer cells. He later joined the faculty at the Yale School of Medicine, where he served as a professor of medicine and pharmacology.

In 1987, Bertino was appointed as the Chief of the Division of Medical Oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). During his tenure at MSKCC, he led numerous clinical trials and research projects aimed at improving cancer treatment protocols.

Bertino's research has focused on the development of new chemotherapeutic agents and the mechanisms of drug resistance in cancer cells. He has published extensively on the role of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) in cancer cell proliferation and the development of methotrexate resistance.

One of his most notable contributions is the identification of the role of folate metabolism in cancer treatment. His work has led to the development of new therapeutic strategies that target folate pathways, improving the efficacy of chemotherapy in patients with leukemia and lymphoma.

Throughout his career, Bertino has received numerous awards and honors, including the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Lifetime Achievement Award and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Distinguished Achievement Award. He is also a member of the National Academy of Medicine.
