Joseph W. Clift (1837–1908) was an American physician and politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Georgia. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Joseph Wales Clift was born on September 30, 1837, in North Marshfield, Massachusetts. He attended the local schools and later graduated from the Harvard Medical School in 1862.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his education, Clift began practicing medicine. During the American Civil War, he served as a surgeon in the Union Army. His medical expertise was utilized in various military hospitals.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Following the war, Clift moved to Savannah, Georgia, where he became involved in politics. He was elected as a U.S. Representative from Georgia's 1st congressional district, serving from March 4, 1868, to March 3, 1869. During his term, he was involved in the Reconstruction era efforts to rebuild and reform the Southern states.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After his term in Congress, Clift continued to practice medicine in Savannah. He remained active in local politics and community affairs until his death on May 2, 1908. He was buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah.
