== June 2016 Tel Aviv shooting ==
The June 2016 Tel Aviv shooting was a mass shooting that occurred on June 8, 2016, at the Sarona Market in Tel Aviv, Israel. The attack resulted in the deaths of four civilians and injuries to six others. The perpetrators were two Palestinian gunmen from the West Bank.
Background[edit | edit source]
The attack took place during a period of heightened tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, often referred to as the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The Sarona Market is a popular shopping and dining complex in central Tel Aviv, frequented by both locals and tourists.
The Attack[edit | edit source]
On the evening of June 8, 2016, two Palestinian gunmen, dressed in suits to blend in with the crowd, opened fire at the Sarona Market. The attackers used automatic weapons to shoot at civilians in the market's restaurants and shops. The attack lasted for several minutes before the gunmen were subdued by Israeli security forces. One of the attackers was shot and wounded, while the other was captured alive.
Casualties[edit | edit source]
Four Israeli civilians were killed in the attack:
- Michael Feige, a professor of sociology and anthropology.
- Ido Ben Ari, a former commando in the Israeli Defense Forces.
- Mila Mishayev, a 32-year-old woman.
- Ilana Naveh, a 39-year-old woman.
Six other individuals were injured, some critically, and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Perpetrators[edit | edit source]
The attackers were identified as cousins from the village of Yatta in the West Bank. They were later linked to the Hamas militant group, although Hamas did not officially claim responsibility for the attack.
Reactions[edit | edit source]
The attack was widely condemned by international leaders and organizations. The United Nations and the European Union issued statements denouncing the violence. In Israel, the attack led to increased security measures and a temporary suspension of entry permits for Palestinians during the Ramadan period.
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
In the wake of the attack, Israeli authorities conducted raids in the West Bank and arrested several individuals suspected of being connected to the gunmen. The incident also reignited debates over security and the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians.
