Justin Trudeau

Justin Pierre James Trudeau (born December 25, 1971) is a Canadian politician who has served as the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada since November 4, 2015. He is the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, having held the position since April 14, 2013. Trudeau is the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history after Joe Clark. He is also the first to be the child of a previous prime minister, as the eldest son of Pierre Trudeau.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Justin Trudeau was born in Ottawa, Ontario, to Pierre Trudeau and Margaret Trudeau. He has two younger brothers, Alexandre and Michel. Trudeau attended the Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf in Montreal and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in literature from McGill University. He also earned a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia.

Early Career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics, Trudeau worked as a teacher in Vancouver, British Columbia. He taught French, math, and drama at West Point Grey Academy and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School. Trudeau also served as the chair of the board of directors for Katimavik, a national youth volunteer organization.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Entry into Politics[edit | edit source]

Trudeau first entered the political arena in 2008 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Papineau riding in Montreal. He was re-elected in 2011, 2015, and 2019.

Leadership of the Liberal Party[edit | edit source]

In 2013, Trudeau won the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, succeeding Michael Ignatieff. Under his leadership, the party saw a significant resurgence, culminating in a majority government win in the 2015 federal election.

Prime Minister of Canada[edit | edit source]

Trudeau was sworn in as the 23rd Prime Minister of Canada on November 4, 2015. His government has focused on various issues, including climate change, electoral reform, and the legalization of cannabis. Trudeau's administration has also been marked by efforts to improve relations with Indigenous communities and to promote gender equality.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Trudeau married Sophie Grégoire Trudeau on May 28, 2005. The couple has three children: Xavier, Ella-Grace, and Hadrien. The family resides at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa.
