K.S. Hegde Medical Academy

K.S. Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA) is a private medical college and hospital located in Deralakatte, near the city of Mangalore in Karnataka, India. It was established in 1999 by the Nitte Education Trust and is affiliated with Nitte University. The academy offers the MBBS course as well as various post-graduation courses.

The campus of KS Hegde Medical Academy is spread over 2.5 acres of land in Deralakatte, about 13 km from Mangalore.

The academy is named after late Justice K. S. Hegde, a former Justice of the Supreme Court of India and former Speaker of the Lok Sabha. It is managed by the Nitte Education Trust, which also runs other professional colleges in Karnataka.

The academy has various departments including Anesthesiology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Dermatology, Otorhinolaryngology, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Microbiology, Neuroscience, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Pathology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Psychiatry, Radio diagnosis & Imaging, and TB, Chest and Respiratory Diseases.

KSHEMA has a sister institute called A B Shetty College of dental sciences, also managed by the Nitte Education Trust. It also has a collaboration with The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, USA for research on diseases like malaria and tuberculosis. The academy has a staff exchange and training program with Maimonides Medical Center, Brooklyn, USA.

In terms of admissions, the academy admits students for the MBBS course through the process of centralized single window counseling based on the merit obtained in the All India Entrance Test, NEET.

The academy offers a 4½ year MBBS course followed by a 1-year medical internship. It also offers various post-graduation courses including MD in Nanotechnology, Anatomy, Physiology, Forensic Medicine, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Community Medicine, General Medicine, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, and Radiology. It also offers MS courses in General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and ENT.

In recent developments, the college hospital has established a state-of-the-art regional research center on communicable diseases in collaboration with the University of Texas Health Sciences.
