Kalighat Kali Temple
Kalighat Kali Temple is a renowned Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kali. It is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the various parts of Sati's body are believed to have fallen, according to Hindu mythology. The temple is located in Kalighat, Kolkata, West Bengal, India.

The Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kolkata, with its origins dating back to the 15th century. The present structure of the temple was built in 1809 under the patronage of the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family of Barisha, who were the landlords of the area.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The temple's architecture is a blend of traditional Bengali style and modern influences. The main sanctum houses the idol of Kali, which is made of black stone and adorned with gold and silver ornaments. The temple complex also includes a Natmandir (dance hall), a Jor Bangla (twin-roofed structure), and a Shiva temple.

Kalighat Kali Temple holds immense religious significance for devotees of Kali. It is believed that the toes of Sati's right foot fell here, making it a revered Shakti Peetha. The temple is also associated with the famous Bengali saint Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who worshipped Kali here.

The temple is a focal point for several Hindu festivals, including Durga Puja, Kali Puja, and Diwali. During these festivals, the temple is adorned with lights and flowers, and thousands of devotees visit to offer their prayers.

Daily rituals at the temple include the offering of flowers, sweets, and animal sacrifices, particularly goats. The temple priests perform various pujas (rituals) throughout the day, starting from the early morning hours.

Kalighat Kali Temple is easily accessible by road, and the nearest metro station is Kalighat metro station. The temple is located near the banks of the Adiganga, a small canal that was once part of the Hooghly River.
