Karluk

Karluk is a small village located in the Kodiak Island Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. It is situated on the southwest side of Kodiak Island, the second largest island in the United States. The village is known for its rich history and culture, particularly in relation to the Alutiiq people who have inhabited the area for thousands of years.

History

The history of Karluk dates back to the prehistoric times when it was inhabited by the Alutiiq people. The village was later discovered by Russian explorers in the 18th century. The Russian-American Company established a trading post in Karluk due to its abundance of salmon and other seafood. The village played a significant role in the Alaska Purchase in 1867.

Karluk is located at 57°34′33″N 154°21′55″W. The village is surrounded by the Karluk River, one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world. The Karluk Lake and the Karluk Wilderness Area are also located nearby, offering a variety of recreational opportunities.

Demographics

As of the 2010 United States Census, the population of Karluk was 37. The village is predominantly Alutiiq, with a significant number of residents claiming mixed Alutiiq and Russian ancestry.

Economy

The economy of Karluk is primarily based on subsistence hunting and fishing. The village is known for its salmon canneries, which were once the largest in the world.

Education

The Karluk School, a K-12 rural school, serves the village. It is a part of the Kodiak Island Borough School District.
