Katja Becker

Katja Becker (born 7 March 1965) is a German biochemist and medical researcher. She is known for her work in the field of biochemistry and medicine, particularly in the study of malaria and other infectious diseases. Becker has made significant contributions to the understanding of the biochemical processes involved in these diseases and has been recognized for her research and academic leadership.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Katja Becker was born in Heidelberg, Germany. She studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg, where she earned her medical degree. She later pursued a doctorate in biochemistry at the same institution, focusing on the molecular mechanisms of infectious diseases.

Career[edit | edit source]

Becker began her academic career as a researcher at the University of Heidelberg, where she worked on the biochemistry of malaria parasites. Her research has been instrumental in identifying potential targets for new antimalarial drugs. She has also studied the redox biology of parasites and the role of oxidative stress in disease progression.

In 2000, Becker was appointed as a professor of biochemistry at the University of Giessen. She has held various academic and administrative positions at the university, including serving as the Vice President for Research and Development.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Becker's research has focused on the biochemistry of infectious diseases, particularly malaria. She has investigated the redox metabolism of Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for the most severe form of malaria. Her work has led to the identification of several key enzymes and metabolic pathways that are potential targets for new antimalarial therapies.

In addition to her work on malaria, Becker has studied other infectious diseases, including leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis. Her research has been published in numerous scientific journals, and she has received several awards for her contributions to the field of biochemistry and medicine.

Professional Affiliations[edit | edit source]

Becker is a member of several professional organizations, including the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. She has also served on the editorial boards of various scientific journals.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Katja Becker is married and has two children. She continues to live and work in Giessen, Germany.
