(Redirected from Kentucky bluegrass)

Poa pratensis, commonly known as Kentucky bluegrass, is a species of perennial plant in the grass family. It is native to practically all of Europe, northern Asia and the mountains of Algeria and Morocco. Although the species is spread over all of the cool, humid parts of the U.S., it is not native to North America.

Description[edit]

Poa pratensis forms a valuable pasture plant, characteristic of well-drained, fertile soil. It is also used for making lawns in parks and gardens. It is common in cool moist climates like the northeastern United States.

Cultivation and uses[edit]

Poa pratensis is used for pasture, hay, and for making lawns. It is also used as a food source for many organisms. The grass is spread by rhizomes and forms a dense mat. It has been used in many specialty situations, including athletic fields, golf courses, and in the creation of lawns.

Ecology[edit]

Poa pratensis provides food for many types of animals, including caterpillars of some Lepidoptera species. The grass also provides cover for small animals and birds.
