He is the President and CEO of the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, the research arm of Northwell Health, and a professor of molecular medicine and neurosurgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Kevin J. Tracey was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He completed his undergraduate studies at Boston College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry. He then attended Boston University School of Medicine, where he received his medical degree (M.D.).

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical degree, Tracey pursued a residency in neurosurgery at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. During his residency, he developed an interest in the intersection of the nervous and immune systems, which led him to a research fellowship in immunology at the Rockefeller University.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Tracey's research has significantly advanced the understanding of the inflammatory reflex, a neural circuit that regulates the immune response. His work has demonstrated how the vagus nerve can modulate inflammation, leading to potential new treatments for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and sepsis.

One of his notable discoveries is the role of the protein HMGB1 (High Mobility Group Box 1) in inflammation and sepsis. His research has shown that blocking HMGB1 can reduce inflammation and improve survival in animal models of sepsis.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Kevin J. Tracey has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to medical research, including the NIH Director's Pioneer Award and the Fauci Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Publications[edit | edit source]

Tracey has authored over 300 scientific papers and several books on neuroscience and immunology. His work is widely cited in the fields of neuroscience, immunology, and molecular medicine.
