Kewaunee County, Wisconsin
Kewaunee County, Wisconsin is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 20,563. The county seat is Kewaunee. The county was created in 1852 and organized in 1859.

Kewaunee County was established in 1852 from parts of Door and Brown counties. The name "Kewaunee" is derived from a Native American word meaning "prairie chicken" or "wild duck."
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,084 square miles (2,810 km²), of which 343 square miles (890 km²) is land and 741 square miles (1,920 km²) (68.4%) is water. The county is bordered by Door County to the north, Manitowoc County to the south, and Brown County to the west.

As of the 2020 census, there were 20,563 people, 8,000 households, and 5,500 families residing in the county. The population density was 60 people per square mile (23/km²). The racial makeup of the county was predominantly White, with small percentages of other races.

Economy[edit | edit source]
The economy of Kewaunee County is primarily based on agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. The county is known for its dairy farms and cheese production. The Kewaunee Nuclear Power Plant was also a significant employer until its closure in 2013.

Kewaunee County is served by several school districts, including the Algoma School District, Kewaunee School District, and Luxemburg-Casco School District. The county also has a campus of the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College.
