Kofoworola Abeni Pratt
Kofoworola Abeni Pratt (1915–1992) was a pioneering Nigerian nurse who made significant contributions to the field of nursing in Nigeria and internationally. She was the first black nurse to work in the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom and later became the first Nigerian Chief Nursing Officer.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Kofoworola Abeni Pratt was born in Lagos, Nigeria, in 1915. She attended the CMS Girls' School and later the Queen's College in Lagos. She pursued her nursing education in the United Kingdom, where she trained at the Nightingale School of Nursing at St Thomas' Hospital in London.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing her training, Pratt worked in the National Health Service (NHS) in the United Kingdom, becoming the first black nurse to do so. Her work in the NHS was groundbreaking and paved the way for other black nurses in the UK.
Upon returning to Nigeria, Pratt took on several key roles in the nursing profession. She was appointed as the first Nigerian Chief Nursing Officer, a position in which she had a significant impact on the development of nursing education and practice in Nigeria. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Nigerian Nurses Association and played a crucial role in the development of nursing policies and standards in the country.
