Krukenberg

Krukenberg tumor is a type of metastatic cancer that primarily originates from the stomach, but can also come from other parts of the body such as the gallbladder, colon, breast, and lung. It is named after Friedrich Ernst Krukenberg, who first described it in 1896.

Epidemiology[edit | edit source]

Krukenberg tumors account for 1-2% of all ovarian tumors, and are most commonly found in women aged 40-50. However, they can occur at any age. The incidence of Krukenberg tumors is higher in Asia and parts of Europe, likely due to the higher prevalence of gastric cancer in these regions.

Pathophysiology[edit | edit source]

The exact mechanism of how Krukenberg tumors spread is not fully understood. However, it is believed that the cancer cells spread through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream to the ovaries. Once there, they grow and form tumors.

Clinical Presentation[edit | edit source]

Patients with Krukenberg tumors often present with abdominal pain, bloating, and ascites. Other symptoms can include weight loss, nausea, and vomiting. In some cases, the tumor may be discovered during a routine pelvic examination.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of a Krukenberg tumor is usually made through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. A definitive diagnosis can only be made through a biopsy of the tumor.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

The treatment of Krukenberg tumors depends on the stage of the disease and the patient's overall health. Treatment options can include surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. In some cases, palliative care may be the best option.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for patients with Krukenberg tumors is generally poor, with a median survival time of less than one year. However, early detection and treatment can improve survival rates.
