Ksara

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ksara is a renowned winery located in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. It is one of the oldest and most famous wineries in Lebanon and is known for its wide range of wines. The winery was established by Jesuit priests in the year 1857 and has been producing wine ever since.

History[edit | edit source]

The history of Ksara dates back to the mid-19th century when Jesuit priests from the Society of Jesus acquired the land that would become the Ksara estate. They discovered a two-kilometer long Roman wine cellar on the estate, which they used to start producing wine. The first wines were made using traditional Lebanese methods, but the Jesuits soon introduced new techniques and grape varieties from France.

In 1973, the Jesuits sold the winery due to a new law in Lebanon that prohibited religious entities from owning businesses. The winery was bought by a consortium of Lebanese businessmen who have continued the tradition of wine production.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

Ksara produces a wide range of wines, including red, white, and rosé. The winery is known for its use of both local and international grape varieties. Local varieties include Obeideh and Merwah, while international varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay.

The winery uses a combination of traditional and modern wine-making techniques. The grapes are hand-picked and then processed in a modern facility. The wine is aged in the ancient Roman cellars, which provide the perfect conditions for aging.

Tourism[edit | edit source]

Ksara is a popular tourist destination in Lebanon. Visitors can tour the ancient cellars, learn about the wine-making process, and taste the winery's products. The winery also has a restaurant that serves traditional Lebanese cuisine.
