Kwethluk

Kwethluk is a city located in the Bethel Census Area of the U.S. state of Alaska. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.7 square miles, of which, 10.0 square miles of it is land and 1.7 square miles of it is water. The city is primarily inhabited by the Yup'ik people, an indigenous group in Alaska.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the census of 2000, there were 713 people, 153 households, and 133 families residing in the city. The population density was 71.3 people per square mile. There were 183 housing units at an average density of 18.3 per square mile.

Healthcare[edit | edit source]

Kwethluk is served by the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC). The YKHC operates the Paul T. Albert Memorial School in Kwethluk, which provides primary and emergency medical care for residents. The nearest hospital is the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital in Bethel, approximately 12 miles away.

Education[edit | edit source]

The Lower Kuskokwim School District operates the Kwethluk School. The school offers education from kindergarten through 12th grade. The school also offers a bilingual program in the Yup'ik language and English.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Kwethluk is accessible by boat, snow machine, and small aircraft. The Kwethluk Airport provides scheduled and charter air service to Bethel and other communities in the region.

Climate[edit | edit source]

Kwethluk has a subarctic climate with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The average annual precipitation is 16 inches, with snowfall averaging 50 inches per year.
