L-Epicatechin

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

L-Epicatechin is a type of flavonoid, specifically a flavanol, found in certain plants such as cocoa, tea, and grapes. It is one of the main active ingredients in chocolate, and is also found in significant amounts in green tea. L-Epicatechin is known for its antioxidant properties and potential health benefits.

Chemical Structure[edit | edit source]

L-Epicatechin is a stereoisomer of catechin, and is part of the class of compounds known as flavan-3-ols. Its chemical structure consists of two aromatic rings (A and B) and a heterocyclic ring (C). The A ring is attached to the B ring by a carbon-carbon bond, and the C ring is attached to the B ring by a carbon-oxygen bond. The structure of L-Epicatechin is similar to that of epicatechin, but with the hydroxyl group on the C ring in a different position.

Health Benefits[edit | edit source]

L-Epicatechin has been studied for its potential health benefits, particularly in relation to cardiovascular disease. Some studies suggest that it may help to improve blood flow, reduce blood pressure, and decrease oxidative stress. It may also have anti-inflammatory effects and could potentially help to prevent cancer and neurodegenerative diseases.

Sources[edit | edit source]

The main dietary sources of L-Epicatechin are cocoa, tea, and grapes. It is also found in smaller amounts in certain fruits, such as apples and berries, and in some types of nuts.
