Louis Benjamin Hanna (August 9, 1861 – April 23, 1948) was an American politician who served as the 11th Governor of North Dakota from 1913 to 1917. He was a member of the Republican Party.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

L. B. Hanna was born in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied business and finance. After completing his education, Hanna moved to Fargo, North Dakota, where he became involved in banking and real estate.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Hanna's political career began when he was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1895. He served in the state legislature until 1897. In 1909, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives representing North Dakota's at-large congressional district. He served in Congress until 1913.

In 1912, Hanna was elected Governor of North Dakota. During his tenure, he focused on improving the state's infrastructure, including the development of roads and bridges. He also worked on reforms in education and public health.

Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]

After serving as governor, Hanna returned to his business interests in Fargo. He remained active in public affairs and continued to support various civic initiatives. L. B. Hanna passed away on April 23, 1948, in Fargo, North Dakota.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Hanna is remembered for his contributions to the development of North Dakota's infrastructure and his efforts to improve the state's educational and public health systems. His tenure as governor marked a period of significant growth and modernization for North Dakota.
