LRP6
LRP6 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the LRP6 gene. LRP6 is a member of the low density lipoprotein receptor (LDL receptor) family, and is a key component in the Wnt signaling pathway. It plays a crucial role in development, cell growth, and disease pathogenesis.
Function[edit | edit source]
LRP6 is a coreceptor for the frizzled protein. The frizzled protein is a receptor for the Wnt signaling pathway. LRP6 binds to Wnt proteins and initiates the Wnt signaling pathway. This pathway is involved in the regulation of gene expression, cell behavior, cell adhesion, and cell polarity.
Clinical significance[edit | edit source]
Mutations in the LRP6 gene have been associated with a variety of diseases, including coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes.
