Labor

Labor (or labour) refers to the physical or mental effort that people put into the production of goods and services. In the context of pregnancy, labor is the process by which the body prepares to deliver a baby. This article will focus on the latter definition.

Stages of Labor

Labor is typically divided into three stages:

First Stage of Labor

Early Labor Phase

The early labor phase is the time of the onset of labor until the cervix is dilated to 3 cm.

Active Labor Phase

The active labor phase is usually characterized by rapid dilation and descent of the cervix.

Transitional Phase

The transitional phase is described as the most challenging part of labor for most women.

Second Stage of Labor

The second stage of labor, also known as the "pushing stage," involves several physiological changes.

Third Stage of Labor

The third stage of labor involves the delivery of the placenta and is the shortest stage of labor.

There are several signs and symptoms that may indicate the onset of labor.

While labor is a natural process, complications can arise that require medical intervention.

Management
