Lactarius helvus - Lindsey

Lactarius helvus

Lactarius helvus is a species of fungus in the family Russulaceae. It is commonly known as the "brown milkcap" due to its characteristic milk that oozes from its gills when cut or damaged. This species is widely distributed in forests of Europe, where it forms mycorrhizal associations with various tree species.

Description[edit | edit source]

Lactarius helvus has a cap that ranges in color from pale brown to dark brown, with a depressed center. The gills are crowded and adnate, and exude a white to pale yellow latex when injured. The stem is cylindrical and often has a slightly bulbous base. The flesh is white and firm, with a mild taste.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

This species is typically found in mixed woodlands, associating with coniferous and deciduous trees such as oaks and pines. Lactarius helvus is widespread in Europe, particularly in regions with temperate climates.

Edibility[edit | edit source]

Lactarius helvus is considered edible, although some individuals may experience gastrointestinal upset after consumption. It is recommended to cook this mushroom thoroughly before eating to neutralize any potential toxins.

Similar Species[edit | edit source]

Lactarius helvus can be confused with other milkcap species, such as Lactarius deliciosus and Lactarius deterrimus. Care should be taken to properly identify these mushrooms before consumption.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

Lactarius helvus was first described by mycologist Elias Magnus Fries in 1838. It belongs to the genus Lactarius, which comprises a diverse group of milkcap fungi.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

The conservation status of Lactarius helvus is currently not assessed. However, like many fungi, its habitat may be threatened by deforestation and habitat loss.
