Laetiporus is a genus of edible mushrooms found throughout much of the world. Some species, especially Laetiporus sulphureus, are commonly known as sulphur shelf, chicken of the woods, the chicken mushroom, or the chicken fungus because many think they taste like chicken. The name "Laetiporus" means "with bright pores".

Description[edit | edit source]

Laetiporus is a genus of fungi in the family Fomitopsidaceae. The genus has a widespread distribution and contains about 10 species. They are typically found growing on or at the base of dead or dying hardwood trees. The fruit bodies are typically bright orange to yellow in color, with a porous underside.

Most species within the Laetiporus genus are considered edible. They are a popular wild mushroom due to their size, abundance, and ease of identification. However, some people may have allergic reactions to these mushrooms, and they should always be cooked before consumption.
