Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in the state of New Jersey, United States. Located approximately 30 miles northwest of Newark, New Jersey, Lake Hopatcong spans four municipalities: Roxbury Township, Jefferson Township, Hopatcong, and Mount Arlington. The lake was originally formed by the damming of the Musconetcong River during the early 19th century for the purpose of the Morris Canal. Over the years, Lake Hopatcong has evolved from a critical part of a transportation system to a popular recreational destination.

History
