Newark
Newark is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Jersey and the seat of Essex County. As one of the nation's major air, shipping, and rail hubs, the city had a population of 282,011 in 2019, making it the nation's 73rd-most populous municipality, after being ranked 63rd in the nation in 2000.

Newark was founded by Puritans from New Haven Colony in 1666. The city saw tremendous industrial and population growth in the 19th and first half of the 20th century. Newark's growth continued through the post-World War II era, but was followed by a severe decline in the 1960s and 1970s.
Geography[edit | edit source]
Newark is located in the heart of New Jersey's Gateway Region, approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Manhattan. Its location near the Atlantic Ocean on Newark Bay has helped make its port facility, Port Newark, the key container shipping facility for the New York metropolitan area, and the largest on the East Coast.
Economy[edit | edit source]
Newark is a major center for the health care industry with hospitals such as the University Hospital, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, and the East Orange General Hospital. The city is also a hub for other industries including finance, insurance, and real estate.
Education[edit | edit source]
Newark is home to several universities and colleges including Rutgers University – Newark, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Seton Hall University School of Law.
Culture[edit | edit source]
Newark is rich in culture with institutions such as the Newark Museum, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), and the Newark Symphony Hall.
Transportation[edit | edit source]
Newark is a significant gateway into the New York metropolitan area and the northeastern United States with an extensive transportation network. The city is served by two airports, Newark Liberty International Airport and Teterboro Airport, and contains major rail connections.
