Lancaster Caramel Company
Lancaster Caramel Company[edit | edit source]
The Lancaster Caramel Company was a confectionery company founded in 1886 by Milton S. Hershey in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It played a significant role in the early career of Milton Hershey, who later went on to establish the Hershey Chocolate Company.
History[edit | edit source]
The Lancaster Caramel Company was established by Milton S. Hershey after he gained experience in the confectionery business through his apprenticeship with a candy maker in Lancaster. In 1886, Hershey started his own caramel manufacturing company, initially operating it as a subsidiary of the Lancaster Caramel Company.
The company quickly gained popularity for its high-quality caramels, which were made using fresh milk, pure butter, and other premium ingredients. The caramels were individually wrapped in wax paper, which helped preserve their freshness and made them convenient for consumers to enjoy.
Expansion and Success[edit | edit source]
As the demand for Lancaster caramels grew, Milton Hershey decided to expand the company's operations. In 1894, he built a larger factory in Lancaster, equipped with modern machinery to increase production capacity. The new factory allowed the company to meet the growing demand for its caramels and expand its distribution to a wider market.
The success of the Lancaster Caramel Company provided Milton Hershey with the financial resources and experience necessary to venture into the chocolate industry. In 1900, he sold the Lancaster Caramel Company for $1 million and used the proceeds to establish the Hershey Chocolate Company in nearby Derry Township, Pennsylvania.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Although the Lancaster Caramel Company no longer exists, its legacy lives on through the success of the Hershey Chocolate Company. Milton Hershey's experience in the caramel business laid the foundation for his later achievements in the chocolate industry. The Hershey Chocolate Company went on to become one of the largest and most renowned chocolate manufacturers in the world.
