Lateral sacral vein
Lateral Sacral Vein[edit | edit source]
The Lateral Sacral Vein is a blood vessel that plays a crucial role in the venous drainage of the pelvis. It is a tributary of the Internal iliac vein and is responsible for carrying deoxygenated blood from the pelvic region back to the heart.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The Lateral Sacral Vein originates from the posterior part of the pelvis, specifically from the sacral venous plexus. It runs parallel to the sacrum, which is the triangular bone located at the base of the spine. The vein receives blood from various sources, including the sacral and lumbar veins.
As it ascends, the Lateral Sacral Vein joins the Common iliac vein on its respective side, forming the Internal iliac vein. The Internal iliac vein then continues its course to eventually merge with the External iliac vein and form the Common iliac vein.
Function[edit | edit source]
The primary function of the Lateral Sacral Vein is to drain deoxygenated blood from the pelvic region. It collects blood from the sacral and lumbar veins, which receive blood from the spinal cord, pelvic organs, and surrounding structures.
The Lateral Sacral Vein plays a crucial role in maintaining proper venous drainage in the pelvis. It ensures that deoxygenated blood is efficiently transported back to the heart for oxygenation and circulation.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
The Lateral Sacral Vein can be affected by various pathological conditions, including venous thrombosis and compression. Venous thrombosis refers to the formation of blood clots within the vein, which can obstruct blood flow and lead to complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism.
Compression of the Lateral Sacral Vein can occur due to factors such as tumors or enlarged structures in the pelvic region. This compression can impede blood flow and result in venous congestion, leading to symptoms such as pain, swelling, and discomfort.
