Lathyrus japonicus

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Lathyrus japonicus, also known as the beach pea, is a perennial plant species in the legume family, Fabaceae. It is native to temperate coastal areas of Asia, Europe, and North America.

Description[edit | edit source]

Lathyrus japonicus is a creeping, herbaceous perennial plant that grows up to 60 cm tall. The leaves are pinnate with two leaflets and a tendril, which can be used for climbing. The flowers are purple, pink, or white, and are produced in pairs or small clusters. The fruit is a legume (pod) containing several seeds.

Distribution and habitat[edit | edit source]

The beach pea is found in coastal areas of the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of Asia, Europe, and North America. It prefers sandy or gravelly soils and is often found in dunes and other coastal habitats.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Lathyrus japonicus has been used as a food source in some cultures, although it is not widely cultivated. The seeds are edible when cooked, but can be toxic if eaten in large quantities. The plant has also been used in traditional medicine for various ailments.

Conservation[edit | edit source]

While not currently considered endangered, the beach pea's habitat is threatened by coastal development and climate change. Conservation efforts are focused on preserving its natural habitats and preventing further loss.
